چکیده

Crop simulation models are valuable tools that scientists can use in testing hypotheses. Models also are used to identify the areas where knowledge is lacking, indicating the need for future research activities. In addition, models are being used as decision support systems at the farm level to optimize resource management. The cotton simulation model, GOSSYM, is a mechanistic process level model which simulates cotton growth, development and yield and has been used for over 20 years as an on-farm decision support tool by cotton growers and consultants resulting in increased profits to cotton producers. By optimizing the inputs such as chemical fertilizers, insecticides, plant growth regulators and harvestaid chemicals, the model not only contributes to increased yields but also helps to decrease environmental contamination. The use and application of the model in research management, yield forecasting, and farm management is reviewed. Also, the application of GOSSYM on the impacts of projected climate change on cotton production is reviewed. Suggested mitigation options to be used in the future higher atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations and warmer temperatures are presented.

Weather, climate, and farmers: an overview

Challenges in linking meteorological and climatological information with a wide range of farming decisions are addressed in this paper. In particular, while a considerable amount of weather and climate information is now available for farmers, some types of information under development or already operational, particularly climate forecasting, formation, may be ill-suited for use by farmers for...

An Integrated Modelling Approach to Conduct Multi- factorial Analyses on the Impacts of Climate Change on Whole-farm Systems

Climate change impact studies on whole-farm systems require a holistic approach due to the complexities of biophysical processes, management and inter-relationships of land use within a single farm. This paper details the process of utilising a multiple-objective, strategic land use planning tool to conduct multi-factorial analyses on the impacts of climate change at the farm scale. Two example...

Evaluating implicit visualization of uncertainty for public policy decision support

Decision makers increasingly rely on science to inform public policy decisionmaking. Although this integration of science and policy offers the potential to support more informed decisions, scientific results are often not provided in a manner usable to decision makers. When faced with highly uncertain conditions, such as climate change, communicating science in a usable manner becomes even mor...

Yarn tenacity modeling using artificial neural networks and development of a decision support system based on genetic algorithms

Yarn tenacity is one of the most important properties in yarn production. This paper addresses modeling of yarn tenacity as well as optimally determining the amounts of the effective inputs to produce yarn with desired tenacity. The artificial neural network is used as a suitable structure for tenacity modeling of cotton yarn with 30 Ne. As the first step for modeling, the empirical data is col...

Delving Into the Details of Evaluating Public Engagement Initiatives; Comment on “Metrics and Evaluation Tools for Patient Engagement in Healthcare Organization- and System-Level Decision-Making: A Systematic Review”

Initiatives to engage the public in health policy decisions have been widely endorsed and used, yet agreed upon methods for systematically evaluating the effectiveness of these initiatives remain to be developed. Dukhanin, Topazian, and DeCamp have thus developed a useful taxonomy of evaluation criteria derived from a systematic review of published evaluation tools that might serve as the basis...
